![]() S-PVA panels are also known for their great black-level and grayscale performance, and the S2111W does not disappoint. The result is an amazingly bright picture similar to that of a high-end HDTV. It was designed by Samsung to achieve an extremely high 1,000:1 contrast ratio (which is boosted to 3,000:1 with the help of EIZO's Contrast Enhancer circuitry). Whereas most reasonably priced consumer and business LCD panels are based on the popular and cost-effective twisted nematic liquid crystal technology, the S2111W uses a more expensive S-PVA (Super Patterned Vertical Alignment) panel. Color adjustments include Temperature, Gamma, and Gain settings, and the 6 Colors feature gives you independent control of hue and saturation levels within the red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, and yellow color palettes. ![]() Other image adjustments include clock and phase levels, brightness and screen position, and power-saving and timer functions. In addition to accessing the Auto Adjust and signal selection features, you can use the switches to toggle between five different contrast modes (Movie, Text, Picture, Custom, sRGB) that best fit your application. A beep let me know when my selection was accepted, so I didn't have to glance up at the screen after each entry. The monitor ships with a USB cable, a DVI cable, and a DVI–analog cable for users who do not have a graphics card with a DVI output. Two downstream USB posts are conveniently located on the left side of the display. At the rear of the panel are two HDCP-compliant DVI ports and an upstream USB port. But it does not allow pivoting for portrait-mode viewing. ![]() It lets you lower the bottom bezel to touch the desk while tilting the top of the panel back, as if you were reading a book. The ArcSwing2 stand provides tilt, swivel, and height adjustability. The 1,680-by-1,050–resolution panel rests atop a round base and is framed by a moderately thin bezel. Not only is it one of the brightest monitors I've seen, but its color and grayscale reproduction are outstanding as well, making it an ideal choice for photo- and video-editing professionals who require accurate color representation. Once you fire it up, though, it becomes clear that this display is in a different league altogether. , the EIZO FlexScan S2111W ($1,099 list) seems like any other 21-inch widescreen monitor, save for the slightly deeper cabinet dimensions and that it costs more than twice as much as most similarly sized LCD panels. ![]()
